DESIGN WORKSHOPS FOR THE NEW MARKET
The recent Covid-19 pandemic has profoundly changed everyone’s behavior and everyday life. It is likely that its effects will continue to influence our lives for a period of time that is difficult to quantify and predict, and that reality as we knew it will be radically different in the future.
This crisis leads us to a critical reflection on the role that design and project-culture can play through the definition of life scenarios and interventions aimed at redeveloping physical and social contexts in a new fashion. Palomar invites to a reflection on the ideas, solutions and objects of the world of tomorrow through a series of thematic training workshops aimed at the new generations of designers. The workshops aim at activating comparison and dialogue, with some prominent figures from the contemporary design world who will guide participants through the design of innovative objects, meeting the challenge of the new meanings that will prevail in the post-crisis world.
Palomarlabs is an initiative promoted by Palomar that aims at strengthening the contact between designers and companies, to encourage the creation of extraordinary new products for the everyday life of the future.
The Palomarlabs are high intensity Design Workshops, aimed at the conception, production and marketing of an industrial product, which may prove relevant in the possible future scenarios that the world population is going to experience.
The Palomarlabs provide a week of intensive training activity to be held through remote live connection, during which the participants, with the support of selected professionals, identify and develop projects related to a specific theme, which is presented and studied in depth in its various theoretical, social and anthropological aspects.
The workshops aim to establish favorable conditions for the development of innovative ideas, taking into consideration the inevitable changes in user behavior and in consumption in the near future. These ideas must make a real contribution to the analyzed context and be able to be effectively converted into products ready to be placed on the market, better still if imagined as part of a production and distribution system based on sustainability, flexibility and efficiency. Participants will have the opportunity to get in touch with Palomar, get to know the reality for which they will be designing and its guiding principles, becoming involved in the company’s reflection regarding its contribution to the society of the future.
Some established designers who are close to the values and philosophy of the company will guide the courses, supporting participants in identifying design opportunities in the analyzed contexts, directing them towards the definition of ideas and stimulating their critical evaluation. The designers will also provide a fundamental contribution to the development of projects in relation to technical issues, to ensure their feasibility. Experts from disciplines both related and unrelated to the design world will also be able to participate. They will enrich the interpretation of the course theme with new and original perspectives. The final projects resulting from the workshop will be subject to evaluation by a committee composed of some of the company’s key figures and the leading designer of the course.
The projects considered most suitable by the committee will subsequently be presented to the company’s main commercial partners: the most prestigious and most famous museum shops, concept stores, department stores of the world. The projects which best meet the objectives will have the opportunity to be marketed and effectively become part of the Palomar catalog.
TYPICAL COURSE SCHEDULE
The first part of the course involves a presentation of Palomar by the CEO and the Brand managers, who will talk about the values and philosophy of the company, including the presentation of some particularly significant projects and case studies. The company will introduce the course’s leading designer to the participants, who will present his/her work focusing in particular on the design process and its guiding methodology. The designer will subsequently share the theme of the course, providing a series of ideas and insights on the subject.
On the first day the course objectives will also be established and the various phases that will lead to the definition of the project ideas will be planned.
The second day could include the intervention of an external guest, who will bring an original point of view regarding the topics covered in the course. Subsequently, the project activities of the individual participants will begin, coordinated by the leading designer of the course according to his/her preferred methods and indications.
The third and fourth day will be dedicated to the development of the individual project activities of each single participant. These activities will be interspersed with verifications, revisions and discussions with the leading course designer, also on a one by one by basis. The leading designer will be available to interact with the participants for half of the day. The last day of the workshop includes the finalization of the projects developed by the individual participants, their presentation to all participants and brief discussion, coordinated and directed by the course’s leading designer.
AFTER THE FIRST WEEK
Week 2 and 3
Second phase of project development and remote finalization of the projects.
Each participant will be given the opportunity to review, correct and better define his/her project for two weeks following the end of the workshop, before final delivery.
The leading designer of the course will be available to the participant for review and revisions according to a schedule that will be defined over these two weeks.
First evaluation phase
Evaluation of projects and identification of the most deserving projects, established by the designer leading the course.
Second evaluation phase
Preliminary feasibility study and project selection by Palomar.
Third evaluation phase
Evaluation of the projects by the network of 100 Palomar partners.
Fourth and final evaluation phase
Final selection of projects by the Palomar internal committee and disclosure of the projects selected for production.

AGREEMENTS BETWEEN PALOMAR AND PARTICIPANTS
The participants commit to the creation of a project consistent with the theme of the course. Participation and implementation of small group projects of maximum 2 people is allowed. The project can be represented with any technique or instrument deemed appropriate and without any limitation (texts, drawings, digital displays, virtual and physical models, etc.).
It is essential to have a computer and an Internet connection. Any material for the development of projects, models and study prototypes will be at the expense of the participants. The participant certifies that he/she is in possession of the licenses for any software that he/she will use for developing his/her own projects. The workshop participant assumes responsibility and certifies the originality of his/her idea. Participants agree to the dissemination, display and publication of their ideas without any limitation. The intellectual authorship of the projects that emerge from the workshops will be attributed to the respective participants.
By taking part in the workshop, participants agree to assign the industrial property rights (IPR) of the projects exclusively to Palomar. Should the project be considered suitable for marketing, Palomar will enter into a contract with the authors of the selected projects, which will govern the aforementioned transfer of rights (IPR) to Palomar through a fee of Euro 1,500.00 which Palomar will pay to the author of the selected project. The author of the selected project will also be paid with royalties equal to 4% of the annual sales turnover.
For the first two years, the royalties deriving from the project will be shared with the leading designer of the course, as compensation for the support given to the birth of the product, according to this proportion:

The participants undertake to lend their support to the company in the development and in the industrialization of the selected ideas. Palomar reserves the right to modify the project for the purpose of industrialization and to be best suited to market needs.
For the two years following the workshop, the projects must remain confidential and the participant agrees not to carry out projects for other companies that can be considered similar or in competition with Palomar’s. If after two years from the end of the workshop the company has not shown interest in the production and/or marketing of the project, the unselected participants will be able to freely communicate their projects on personal websites and portfolios, provided that this is done without any reference to Palomar.
The courses are open to designers of legal age and under the age of forty, with the following prerequisites:
- architects and designers holding a qualification (Degree or equivalent diploma) from university Departments of Architecture, Design, Schools or Institutes of Design, Fashion and Academies of Fine Arts.
- students from university Departments of Architecture, Design, Schools of Design, Fashion and Academies of Fine Arts. Self-taught designers are encouraged to participate. Their admission will take place following a CV/portfolio evaluation at the discretion of the company and the course’s leading designer.
The official language of the course is English.
The maximum number of participants is limited to 20.
Participation in the course is subject to the advance payment of the Euro 750 registration fee.
